Pudsey St Lawrence is the home club of two of Yorkshire and England’s greatest ever players, Sir Len Hutton and Herbert Sutcliffe.

Herbert Sutcliffe

In 1908, Herbert Sutcliffe aged 13 began his playing career for Pudsey St Lawrence's second team. The following year, Sutcliffe followed in has fathers footsteps and made his first-team debut.

Two of his team-mates were Major Booth of Yorkshire and England, sadly killed on the Somme in the first world war and Henry Hutton, father of Len Hutton.

Herbert Sutcliffe went on to become one of Yorkshire and England’s finest opening batters, winning the ashes in Australia and scoring 50,000 1st class runs and 4555 test runs at and average of 60.73, the highest of any Englishman and 66.85 in ashes tests second only to Don Bradman.

Len Hutton was born on 23 June 1916 in Pudsey. His family had a cricketing background: his father and brothers played for Pudsey St Lawrence CC, he himself joined St Lawrence as a junior, making his first appearance for the club's second eleven aged twelve.

By 1929, Hutton was playing for the first eleven, at this stage Hutton came under the influence of Yorkshire and England cricketer Herbert Sutcliffe.

Impressed by Hutton, Sutcliffe and the Pudsey St Lawrence president recommended him to Yorkshire.

Len Hutton broke Sir Donald Bradman`s world record by scoring 364 against the Australians at the oval and was knighted for his achievements.

You can see the actual stumps and bail from his record breaking innings and photographs recording his career in the St Lawrence clubhouse. His achievements are celebrated by the Hutton gates as you enter St Lawrence.

Cricket Club Room Hire

Pudsey St Lawrence offers a perfect venue for room hire and private function bookings. While we are better known for our famous cricketing heritage, our clubrooms provide the perfect facility for meetings and private functions.

St Lawrence is a private members club providing intimate and comfortable surroundings for bookings of up to 150 people. We can provide either a partitioned off area or you can hire the whole of the clubhouse including catering and bar facilities.

Our bar provides a full range of drinks from hand pulled ale and lager to a comprehensive range bottled drinks and spirits. We can also provide a varied wine list and soft drinks for all members of the family, all at “club prices” served by friendly staff.
